Yesterday was a busy day for us. With getting the vehicle once maybe twice a week we make sure we get the most out of our day. Yesterday we met up with a girl friend & her 2 little people at a local play area. All the kids were nicely playing when the big girls came running over very curious about a little boy in the play area. They were trying to tell us mommies how the little boy had a foot on his hand. It took a few times of them repeating this comment before my girl friend & I realized just what they were saying. We looked around the play area to see a little boy who was born special. We explained to the girls while many people look the same there are just as many that have differences like this little boy but everyone is special!! The girls took that & ran back to play.
A short while later this little boys parent came into the play area & he too had something different about him the girls wanted to learn more about. The two big girls again (our ring leaders) went up to this man & asked about his prosthetic leg (bright orange in color) the man was okay with this & started talking to the girls & shortly after all 4 kids were there listening very intently to this man talk about his leg & showing how he had a hinge for an ankle & spun his shoe/foot around several times this was a big hit with the younger two. (so much for not talking to strangers) The man spent a long time telling the kids all about prosthetics. Then he excused himself for a second & came back with more to show the kids. He had just made a prosthetic arm/hand for his son. The kids thought this was really COOL!!! The man let the kids handle it. They were very impressed. Thank you very much to this stranger who gave our kids a lesson in prosthetics. Who says kids need junior kindergarten my girls are getting a great
education just by going to the local play centres.
I was most proud when at the end of the conversation with the man my eldest daughter said thank you to the man (without queing) !!
Today has been a day with more questions about prosthetics. I hope my girls are always so open minded to learn / accepting of people with difference.
